In Case of Feeling Good
Image
In Case of Feeling Good is a mixed media installation of my subjective iteration regarding Disney’s Three Little Pigs animation series (1933-1939). I perceive a sense of sadism from the pigs’ cuteness and a pleasure shifting between the power and powerlessness, tenderness and aggression among the wolf and the pigs – two conceived opposing parties.
I create an equivocal space around a right-angled corner using two sets of free-standing walls with different sized elliptical holes. Furthermore, the corner is in company with a metal rack half-covered with black faux fur. On the metal rack, I reassemble the tools and devices inspired by the punishing scenes of the animation series using readymades like educational wooden toys and BDSM sex toys bought from Etsy and Taobao, respectively. Meanwhile, I hang some puppet sausage and dissected pork on the back of the walls. I also put some wooden toy guns and apples with the original Disney storybooks on the noggings – some objects appeared in the animation but held ambiguous indications.
The setting suggests a stage and a backstage, or a group of sexual restraint apparatus as a whole. Through the work, I try to reference Sianne Ngai’s argument, “Cuteness enables consumers to enjoy a certain fantasy of ourselves as having power over domestic commodities that, in reality, are much more in control of us.” (Ngai, The Cute, 16.)
