One of One of a Kind

"One of One of A Kind" uses new tools to explore the value in old ways of making. Through a series of long-form, generative, domestic objects, this project suggests deep parallels between our latest creative technologies and pre-industrial material cultures. An accompanying collection of essays highlights the social and cultural possibilities and tensions created by this paradox.

This project uses a custom trained AI model to generate a hyperlocal camouflage pattern for Davis Memorial Wildlife Refuge in East Greenwich, RI. It’s the smallest wildlife refuge owned by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, making it the smallest actively conserved piece of nature in the smallest U.S. state.

This quilt is the 165,767th output of a generative algorithm based on 2D cellular automata. It also resembles a pixelated version of a traditional “quilt star” pattern. This double-coding evokes the intersections and parallels I see between traditional craft practices and emerging digital culture.

Gilt Randomness Frame

This frame celebrates computational randomness and its role in affording uniqueness and personal meaning to designs made with generative systems. A random noise texture is turned into ornamentation for one of my favorite family photos (my grandparents in the park). The texture was 3D printed and then gilded.

Swiss Mountain Chair

The Swiss mountain chair is a vernacular form from the Middle Ages. It usually has a utilitarian base paired with a highly ornamented, hand-carved back. The back on mine is one output among many from an algorithm which produces patterns which are carved with a CNC milling machine.
