New Mapping

Most visual language and conventions in the digital space are originated from Western cultural, scientific, and geographic perspectives. Despite its liminality as a digital space, it inherently has a strong bond with the physical space. And as much as contemporary perception takes place in the digital world, the world is becoming westernized more rapidly. This Dowon’s focus on digital colonization has, ironically, stemmed from his exploration to bridge the gap between digital and physical space. He has focused on the migration between both areas through various representation tools and materials. He learned that tools play a significant role in building a worldview and was reminded that the appearance of standards has bias and violence that inevitably causes queerness. By using traditional East Asian painting and lens-based images, he hacks the western grid, lens, representation, and reading direction.
