Safe Ground

Built in the early 1900’s, our Host structure is a decommissioned Convent building located within a complex of a Church and a School in a dignified neighborhood of single family residential homes. Historically, four storey Brick building has been altered to accommodate for various programmatic needs, not maintaining a pristine condition.

The building had a specific front door and as a program we have reversed it to the rear. The repositioned front door is an architectural retort to the psychological response of the neighborhood. A single storey volume is inserted into the existing courtyard transforming the interactions within the host structure, emphasized by the repositioned entrance. Visible from afar, the sculptural skylights puncture the roof of the volume, giving the shelter a positive and contemporary identity. This intervention adds to the existing as a new layer in time that celebrates child centric approach through the lens of trauma informed design.

Trauma-informed design is about integrating the principles of trauma-informed care into design with the goal of creating physical spaces that promote safety, well-being and healing. As a preliminary research, this project illustrates and demonstrates these particular values into concepts of architectural design.

The vehicular and pedestrian access is redirected to the proposed front of the building. Vegetation is strategically placed as soft boundaries between other buildings in the complex.

The careful addition of architectural thresholds regulate the interaction between Public, Semi Public and Private areas, ensuring control and security. Towards the interior, large communal spaces are planned with micro rooms. These shared spaces inculcate a sense of community whilst keeping minimal but sufficient comfort for residents in their private rooms. As homelessness can make one feel lonely and insecure, the balance of these two zones ensures comfort and support. Thus, creating a platform for growth

This intervention celebrates the first impression into the shelter through a playful layer of program. The softness of the material in the play area encompasses the feeling of lightness and reinforces the concept of a “safe ground”.

This adaptive reuse proposal explores the meaning of luxury and its translation to Contemporary Indian design. The cantilever is an expression of luxury. Floating masses and large overhangs have always left me in awe. With its complexity in design and attention to detail cantilevered structures elevate the rather ordinary brick façade of the existing structure into something extraordinary. Rather than insisting on exclusivity, the protected outdoor space under the cantilever creates a luxurious public space
