How do we realize the significant Effect of green gentrification and how we deal with it effectively?

The concept of green gentrification originated from gentrification itself. It contains both a phenomenon and a socioeconomic trend that continued a long time of class division and racial equality issues. Since ancient Rome, gentrification began to cause a change in the city’s plan and outlook, which would be one of the focus points for this project.

As landscape architects, we often view our discipline as the pioneer of “greenlize” the society while ignoring the influence of accelerating the process of gentrification in cities.

At first, this project intends to retrospect the history of both gentrification and green gentrification. Clarify the cause and effect of this social phenomenon and analysis their forming mechanism. Then it comes thinking about the relationship between landscape design and community gentrification. The second part of this thesis is to come up with a solution to deal with the contradiction between improving community green work and displacing certain groups of community members.

Finally, this project would also like to mention other issues that may partly be connected to this question. For example, economic and land policy, the housing rental and market price, the cost of landscape modification, and community participatory interaction during the greening process.

This project focuses mainly on analyzing the cause and effect of landscape gentrification and figuring out what we could do to ease the situation as landscape architects.

Recently, gentrification has caused not only economic but also social and political issues globally. How to use design and theoretical methods to change this status quo then motivate my doing related research.

The concept of green gentrification originated from gentrification itself. It contains both a phenomenon and a socioeconomic trend that continued a long time of class division and racial equality issues.

Our discipline, since its origin, has been dedicated to building a connection between human communities and nature. However, the past century witnessed rapid landscape projects that accelerated the change in community look and displacement of its members. This project intends to evaluate the level of gentrification in a few communities here in Providence, figure out how landscape gentrification affects community members, and what can do from a landscape architects' attitude to bring them happiness and prosperity.
