In a Condition
of No Light
My mother lives in a dark apartment with beautiful things that are easily broken. As a child, I lived there with my mother and eventually my stepfather as well. As an adult, I return now and again to restage and reimagine the repertoires rehearsed there, across time and generations. This work explores the physical and psychological space of my childhood home and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships that inform my somatic experience of that space. I create fictions rooted in autobiography about the plastic truths of the home, and how it serves as a stage for the performance of wealth, domesticity, whiteness, and gender. Because the work is about the apartment, it is also inevitably about the things in the apartment, and the people who occupy the apartment – all of which respond in strange and careful ways as we circumnavigate each other in the play of our given domestic roles.
