Explorations in Art Teaching

I believe in art education that is engaging, equitable, and centered around an ethics of care. For me, engaging curriculum means collaborating with students to cultivate regenerative processes that center students as whole humans. I scaffold opportunities to develop artistic visions and creative solutions to design problems and I embrace experimentation as essential. Through reflexive prompts and multimedia experiences, my approach supports students to learn about themselves, other artists, and the world. I invite students to pursue their interests and, in exposing them to new ways of engaging with materials, ideas, and relationships, I support them to expand their interests, deepen their skillsets, and approach life with care and curiosity.

In our art room, we build motor skills and critical thinking skills. We experience the social and emotional benefits of artmaking individually and in community.
I believe art education can inspire people in all aspects of their lives.

Kindergarteners' Creatures and Their Habitats

2023

Inspired by alebrijes, Kindergartners made creatures out of air-dry clay, pipe cleaners, and feathers. Then they learned about different animals’ habitats and built their own habitats for their creatures to live in.

A square piece of white foam core colored with marker in sections of orange, pink, and pinkish red. A shell is attached to the pink section, sitting on a blob of dark blue and red air-dry clay. A sparkly blue piece of stretch fabric is affixed to the pinkish red section with two strips of color-swirled air-dry clay on either end of the fabric. A rectangular piece of cardboard covers a large portion of the foam core and extends beyond the left side. The cardboard has squiggly lines and insects drawn on it in

4th Grader's Collaborative Artwork

2023

Students were invited to draw with oil pastel, then switch papers with a partner and paint on their partner’s drawing. A student chose to continue working on this collaboration, and it is in-progress when this photo was taken.
