Baby Carrots and Other Hardcore Arts

As someone who loves to share ideas and learn from others, art is my main tool for communicating my thoughts. Art is storytelling, art is bizarre, grand, simple, muted; it has infinite possibilities. You would think in a world as infinite as art that there would be a place for everyone, so why aren’t there more people who would proudly call themselves artists?

My mission as an art educator is to break down the barriers that people may have with art. Whether it is learning technical drawing skills, creating art for self expression, giving my students a way to self-advocate, or using their abilities to amplify the voices of others, I want students to feel empowered by art, and by extension, develop their self-esteem so that they can confidently face any challenge that comes their way.

A weaving activity for the upperclassmen at my High School placement. As many of the students love anime, but don't seem to know much about Japanese culture itself, I wanted to introduce a traditional Japanese handicraft that was connect to a well-known anime movie. During the creation of the kumihimo braid, we had a small discussion about cultural preservation and traditional artforms that are fading as civilization continues to modernize. Overall, a popular project that students dragged friends from other
