Decolonial Perspective on Fashion Industry

This thesis explores the intersection of colonialism with the fashion industry, presenting a decolonial perspective. The city of Faisalabad, renowned as the largest textile hub in Pakistan, serves as a central production space for textile manufacturing. However, its growth heavily relies on cotton production from neighboring rural villages, resulting in severe degradation of soil and negative environmental consequences that contribute to national food and health crises.

This thesis proposal aims to challenge the existing paradigm by advocating for the integration of production spaces within rural economies. By prioritizing sustainable practices and incorporating design elements that reflect the traditional values and cultural heritage of rural Pakistani communities, this research seeks to forge connections between people, buildings, and the land. The proposed approach aims to foster a more balanced and harmonious relationship between the fashion industry and the environment, thereby mitigating the exploitation of land resources and promoting healthier ecosystems.
