My name is Jorge. I am an artist and writer from San Antonio, Texas, though my roots are from Central Mexico. My work manifests as iterations of stories, video games, installations, images, and interactive devices. I use these means as a way of investigating the meanings and/or interactions between land, displacement, ghosts/hauntings, science fiction, embodied memory, decolonization, indigeneity and diaspora.

This piece is an exploration on utopias through crafting a space that culminates where nostalgia, knowledge and history meet. It draws upon collapsing timelines to experiment with ways of engaging the ancestral past and ourselves as the ancestors of the future. The game allows one to travel in and out of the holographic space of the sphere using a glass game controller.

A study on displacement and my positionality on Wampanoag and Narragansett land. Using the soil on which RISD occupies, I cast my feet in glass which I then placed over a large print of an inverted flash photograph of the area's flora. The glass bubbled as if the soil were speaking.

Perhaps this may articulate the nuance of this often confusing and haunting feeling of being displaced on a land that is not my native land, but may hold some kinship in solidarity to my own indigenous roots.

This is the 11th and last page of the "on the land" book. It is a printed photograph of the tree from outside my window in Providence, Rhode Island, that is in the shape of a hand reaching out from the ground. I had never noticed its shape until I began working on this book. Documentation is taken on the asphalt ground in front of the depicted tree.

Gorilla Warfare

Inspired by several coup d’etats in Latin America, and specifically the Guatemalan coup d’etat in the 50s that was sprung about because of the United Fruit Company, I created a first person shooter, Gorilla Warfare. In this game, you play as a Guatemalan farmer who finds a magical glass banana gun and must defend their land against U.S. trained troops. Will you prevail?
