My thesis film, Dog Husband, explores identity, relationship dynamics, and constructed definitions formed both in the presence of others and in private. In observing myself and my partner in our relationship, I’ve recognized our changing individual identities; things shared verses things internalized. Simultaneously, living in a three bedroom apartment with roommates made me curious about who we are behind our bedroom doors.
The way Marma and Dog Husband define their relationship doesn’t influence how they treat each other. Just because ‘Dog Husband’ is his name, doesn’t mean he is a husband. Maybe his family gave him that name because they wanted him to get married one day. Although Marma and Dog Husband live together, they have separate personal identities, revealed when they are alone.
