This directed research questions how design methodologies can mediate spatial, material and programmatic relations between interior and exterior. This question emerges from two observations; first the disparity in clear design intent and agency between two conditions as well as the consequence of social disengagement through the prioritization of the exterior over interior in communication the design ambition.The research project responds to 3 contemporary conditions in 3 cities chosen: New York City, San Francisco and Istanbul. The design response is shaped through understanding the motives of a project chosen in each city and reimagining the potential that these motives could have provided. These projects are re-imagined for expanding their agency beyond their visual expression.

The disparity in program and structure between interior and exterior is addressed through the shear wall structure shaped around the performative garden designed at the center of the project. The office spaces are shaped dynamically in response to the two gardens external and internal in the project.

New forms and ways of creating openness informs the project. Here a crossing axis that cuts through the volume, brings programmatic shift as well as organizes the spaces around it. Becoming an anchor to the project organizationally and programmatically the volume is further specified to maximize daylight as well as create a variety of spatial conditions.

The design is informed by creating elevated street conditions that expand and contract in volume for a diversity of programs. The shared courtyard brings daylight to all the units.
