Molly Kate
Young

My name is Molly Kate Young, and I am a New England-based illustrator and designer. I like to make things that are bright, thoughtful, and sincere.

In addition to my BFA in Illustration, I have a concentration in Literary Arts and Studies and an additional focus on Graphic Design. I am particularly passionate about art direction, design, publishing, storytelling, comics, and people.

My main hobbies include finding cats to pet, visiting my niece and nephew, and cooking too much food.

Backpack Girlfriends Tour Poster

Digital

This is a mock-tour poster for my band, Backpack Girlfriends. The focus of the project was on a marriage of illustration and type. My personal goal for this poster was to try to allow readability to be less important, and focus on shapes and color harmonies instead.

Mockup from Twilight Saga Redesign BLAD

Photoshop

This mockup is an image from my Twilight Saga Redesign BLAD (Book Layout And Design). Through a lot of research, thinking, sketching, and iteration, I ended up with four book designs and a system for the interior. My redesigns are heavily based on the original series, but from an angle that is simplified, modernized, and introduces illustration.

Overcast Zine

Hand-bound book
6" x 8"

For this project, I decided to create a book about climate change in New England. I used the language of old wives' tales and superstitions juxtaposed with facts about the climate, water, and land in order to create a narrative that is as emotional as it is educational.

What did you do when you were little?

Digital
8.5" x 11"

For a zine developed by Blue Wallick on the topic of magical people. I decided to write a little poem and design a character around the idea of helplessness in childhood. Not every child always has someone around to ask for help and support. To be fair, many adults also don't have anyone to go to when they are in need. This piece is a meditation on these themes.

Envy

Colored pencil and digital

The goal of this comic was to use color to further a narrative. I had been making a lot of projects in full color, so I wanted to push myself to use only one color plus black to tell a story.

Quilted

Acrylic paint on acetate
9" x 11"

A wordless, one page comic about quilting and the positive feelings associated with crafting things with your hands. This project was also an exploration in material. The painting and lines were done on separate sheets of acetate, then layered on top of one another. Sort of like an animation cell, but not really.

Slow and Steady at Tea in Sahara

Colored pencil and InDesign
11" x 17"

The assignment for this journalistic illustration project was to create a review for a local restaurant. I reviewed one of my favorite places at the time, Tea in Sahara. I sketched my meal and the environment in pen and colored pencils. Then, after writing my review, I assembled all of the pieces into a mock magazine spread.

Thank You E-Card

Digital

This piece is one of three digital greeting cards. For this project, I wanted to explore hand-drawn type with hand-drawn animation. These digital greeting cards are inspired by my mom, who is not very good at texting but loves sending GIFs. Feel free to share this with your mom, or whoever you'd like to receive this message.
