My paintings are constructed by collaging together multiple sources: photographic stills of figure skating, Cèline Dion performing on stage, ballroom dancing, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2003), landscape paintings from Gericault and Hudson River School. These varied images are digitally collaged to generate imagery. After the images are gathered and collated, I deploy such things as drawing, color, and composition with oil and acrylic paint to create an intensely updated process based, gestural figurative paintings. In using a figure like Cèline, I hope to capture her movement and aura by moving away from depicting her naturalistically but instead as a series of abstract marks and gestures. This retains the essence of her image which then transfers to the body of a nude gay man.
