Graduating in the Spring of 2020, we find ourselves in Uncertain Terrain, a tierra incognita of this global information age, created by conditions that are changing so quickly that we can’t be sure what the future holds. In early March, our cohort left our RISD studio space that we had shared for three years and, like the rest of the world, transitioned to a virtual mode of working because of the ongoing global pandemic. Although many aspects of the future aren’t as certain as they seemed when we began our journey at RISD, others are increasingly clear: as a discipline at the intersection of nature and culture, our work remains as relevant as ever. As future landscape architects, we are well prepared to meet uncertainty with creativity, empathy, and a design toolkit that will allow us to think and make our way to a healthier, more beautiful, and more equitable world.
